Kandili is an independent service that alerts people to Kenya Power's planned outages. It is not affiliated with Kenya Power. This page says what Kandili keeps about you and how to remove it.
What we store
When you message the Kandili bot on Telegram, we store:
- Your Telegram chat id, the number Telegram uses to deliver our messages to you, and when you last messaged the bot.
- The places you follow, and whether your alerts are paused.
- Your alert history: which alerts we sent you, for which outage, and when.
- Your calendar link, if you asked for one with /calendar, including old links you replaced, marked as no longer working.
When you sign up by email, we store your email address, the place you follow and your alert history, the same as above. Until you enter the code we email you, we keep only the pending code: your address, the place you picked, a scrambled copy of the code and of your IP address. We delete it once you enter the right code, and otherwise within an hour.
We don't store your name, username or phone number. Place names you search for in the bot aren't stored. On the website, a search is part of the page address, so it shows up in our request logs (below).
Why
Only to run the service: the chat id or email address lets us send you alerts, the places say which outages to alert you about, and the alert history makes sure you never get the same alert twice. The scrambled IP address only limits how many codes one network can ask for, so nobody can use our form to flood someone's inbox. We don't sell or share your data, show ads, or use tracking or analytics.
Who else is involved
- Telegram carries every message between you and the bot, under Telegram's privacy policy.
- Resend sends our emails, so it handles your email address and the emails we send you, under Resend's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts serves the fonts on this website, so your browser asks Google for them.
- Like any website, our server keeps request logs, including IP addresses, so we can fix problems.
Your calendar link
Anyone who has your calendar link can see the places you follow. Send /calendar and tap New link to stop the old one working.
How long we keep it
Until you delete it. Clearing the chat in Telegram deletes nothing on our side. Blocking the bot stops alerts, but deletes nothing either.
Deleting your data
By email: use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of any alert. It deletes your email address, your place and your alert history at once.
On Telegram: send /delete to the bot and confirm. That removes your chat id, places, alert history and calendar links at once, and your calendar link stops working. If you message the bot again afterwards, you start fresh.
